Wake up Australia

September 7, 2010 § Leave a comment

Politics is something I rarely talk about, mostly because prior to this year, I have either not known enough about it or cared about it to hold a decent conversation with anyone. Other times I have simply chosen to ignore it, since being a citizen of nowhere meant that whatever happened, politics in any one country would never entirely affect me or my immediate surroundings. Things have changed this year. With the new Labor government announced this afternoon, I’m proud to say that my vote helped make it happen, despite the last 17 days of an uncertain election. Although they didn’t win by a large majority, I am happy to know that at least 50% of the country fought hard enough to put them there. The other half of the country who believe that women’s role should be to stay at home and make babies, that gays and lesbians should not have any rights, that lack of religion equals lack of family values, and that Australia can truly continue functioning without its immigrants – wake up. Congratulations you unmarried Atheist woman.
